Salary The hiring rate is $41,170 and the job rate is $52,552 effective April 1, 2010.
Work Schedule Monday through Friday
40 Hours per week
Working with inmate population
Qualifications certification issued by the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf, Inc. (RID):

OR

A passing score on the written portion of the RID certification examination and two years of experience providing sign language interpretive services;

OR

A rating of intermediate or above on the Sign Language Proficiency Interview (SLPI) conducted by the National Technical Institute for the Deaf.

Duties / Responsibilities Under the supervision of the Deputy Superintendent of Programs, the Translator Manual Communications will provide or coordinate sign language interpreting services for inmates who are deaf or hard of hearing and communicate primarily with sign language. The incumbent of this position will communicate through the use of American Sign Language, providing sign to voice and voice to sign interpreting between the inmate and facility staff. If a deaf or hearing impaired inmate does not communicate verbally, the incumbent will also be responsible for speaking the inmate's responses. In all cases, the Translator Manual Communications will relay information either exactly as it is spoken or exactly as it is signed by the inmate.
