Groveland Holds Veteran's Education Training Day

DOCCS continues to enhance the services provided to the 1,950 veterans incarcerated throughout New York State. Groveland Correctional Facility currently provides services for 128 veterans. On November 8th, Groveland Correctional Facility celebrated its first annual Veteran's Education Training (VET) Day.

This celebration is a "thank you for your service" and establishes a camaraderie among DOCCS inmate/veterans. It is also one of many new programs New York State is offering for those who have served our country.

Inmate/veterans volunteer to attend the VET day celebration, at which the Governor's Veterans' Day Proclamation was read and presented to those veterans in attendance. The intent of Groveland CF's veterans programs is to ensure a positive and meaningful transition back to the community and help rebuild the soldier that once was.

Groveland staff collaborated with several not-for-profit agencies and community providers, including We Soldier On, NYS Department of Labor, NYS Veteran's Administration, Western New York Heroes Inc., Clearpath, Pathstone, and the Hornell Human Society. Our canine "Matilda" and her handler were also present.

Fifty veterans attended and had direct contact with representatives in a fair-like atmosphere and were able to obtain information regarding benefits. The benefits included suicide prevention, case management, employment, addiction, housing placement, services for veteran families, transportation, education, and emergency and support services.

In addition, Groveland's inmate Veteran's Organization shared information regarding out-of-state resources for veterans who would like to leave the state once they are released. The Veteran's Organization also provided coffee and donuts, and a color guard.

Groveland's Protestant choir sang the National Anthem and the veteran house band provided light music. Feedback about the event was positive.

A few quotes from the event:
"Very informative and helpful"
"I felt like a soldier again and not an inmate."
